Samuel's childhood

Hannah presents her son, Samuel, to Eli the priest, in fulfillment of her vow that she made to the Lord, as stated in the first book of Samuel; Painting by Gerbrand Eichot, 1665.

The book begins by mentioning the story of Elkanah, a man from the tribe of Ephraim and a resident of Ramah, married to Hannah and Peninnah, but Hannah had no children, which made her subject to ridicule from society and her co-wives. Soldiers at Shiloh. the days of Judge Ali's rule; On one occasion, during their presence in Shiloh, Hannah turned to the Lord in supplication: she cried weeping and made a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if you look at the humiliation of your handmaiden and remember me, and do not forget your handmaid, but give her human seed, I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life.

So what she asked for was fulfilled, and she bore a son, and she called him Samuel, that is, he listened to God, saying: Because I asked the Lord for him. Then, when she weaned him, she took him up with her with three bulls, an ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the Lord in Shiloh, while the boy was young.

The second chapter of the book mentions Hannah's joy and her rejoicing, and mentions a barber that she also conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters, then moves on to mention Eli the priest and his children whom Samuel had: Eli was very old and heard of all that his sons had done to all Israel, and that they used to lie with women gathered together at the door of the tent of meeting.

. Despite Eli’s rebuking of them, an envoy from God whom the book calls “the man of God” may be a prophet or an angel who came to Eli telling him that because of the corruption of his two sons, the kingdom will be taken away from him and his family will cease to exist. The book mentions here that Samuel: increased in growth and righteousness with the Lord and with people as well.

The book moves on in the third chapter to talk about what is called today in Christianity by the name of Samuel’s call. While he was asleep, God called him. Samuel thought that Eli the priest was calling him, so he went to him. After the command was repeated three times, Samuel answered the Lord: Speak, O Lord, for your servant hears. This is based on the advice of Ali. This section of the book relates to the end of a stage and the beginning of a stage.

The chapter begins with the phrase: It was at that time. It also mentions that the prophecy was discontinued among the Children of Israel. As for the content of Samuel’s call, God told him what Eli had told him about the demise of his rule, but he told Samuel that he would become A great prophet: And all Israel knew from Dan to Beersheba that Samuel had been entrusted as a prophet of the Lord.
