 Quba Mosque site

mosque is located to the south of Medina. The mosque was built by the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, when he migrated from Mecca to Medina.

Building the Quba Mosque

When the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to Medina - it was then called "Yathrib" - an immigrant, he stopped in its southwestern suburb at Bani Amr bin Auf in "Quba", and stayed with their sheikh Kulthum bin Al-Hadam for four days during which he founded the "Quba Mosque", then continued He walked until he reached Medina, where he settled in and established the Islamic state.

And the Messenger himself participated with his companions, may God be pleased with them, in building the Quba Mosque, so he was the first to place a stone in its qiblah, thus becoming the first mosque founded in Islam, and it comes - among the mosques of Medina - next to the Noble Prophet’s Mosque in terms of space and virtue.

The virtue of Quba Mosque

The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the Quba Mosque and prays there, it will be for him a reward similar to that of ‘Umrah.”

A brief overview of the mosque throughout history

When the Muslims in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah heard of the departure of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) from Makkah Al-Mukarramah, they used to go out every day to Al-Harrah at the beginning of the day. And when the Messenger of God (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family) reached the village of Quba in the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, he stayed in Bani Amr ibn Awf in Quba on Kulthum ibn al-Hadam. He was founded on piety, and he (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family) used to transport stones, rocks, and dirt with his companions.

In front of this mosque, the hypocrites built another mosque, and called the Messenger of God (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family) to pray in it. In it there is a mosque founded on piety…”. And the Qur’an expressed it as a mosque of Dirar. The Prophet (may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family) ordered it to be demolished and burned.

Muslims cared about the Quba Mosque during the past ages, so Othman bin Affan renewed it, then Omar bin Abdul Aziz, who exaggerated its embellishment and made it spacious and porches, and a minaret, which is the first minaret to be erected in it, and in the year 435 AH, Abu Ali Al-Husseini renewed it, and in the year 555 AH, Jamal Al-Din Al-Isfahani renewed it.

The Quba Mosque was renewed many times, and its minaret fell in the year 877 AH, so Sultan Qaitbay renewed it in the year 881 AH with the architecture of the Prophet’s Mosque. It was mentioned that Sultan Mahmud Khan al-Othmani renewed it in the year 1240 AH, and during the era of the Ottoman Empire it was renewed several times, the last of which was during the time of Sultan Abdul Majeed. During the Saudi era, the Quba Mosque received great care, so it restored and renewed its outer walls, and added to it from the northern side in the year 1388 AH.

In the year 1405 AH, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd bin Abdulaziz, ordered to rebuild it and multiply its area several times while preserving its heritage features accurately. He demolished the old building and annexed plots of neighboring land from its four sides to the new building. The expansion extended and it was rebuilt with the same old design, but made It has four minarets instead of its single old minaret, each minaret on one side and a height of 47 meters.

The mosque was built in the form of a southern portico and a northern one, separated by an open courtyard. The two porticoes are connected to the east and west by two long porticoes. Its surface consists of a group of connected domes, including 6 large domes, each 12 meters in diameter, and 56 small domes, each 6 meters in diameter.

To arches that stand on huge columns inside each portico, the floor and courtyard of the mosque are covered with heat-reflecting marble, and the courtyard is shaded by an automatic umbrella made of fiberglass cloth that folds and spreads as needed. The area of the chapel alone reached 5035 square meters, and the area occupied by the mosque building with its service facilities reached 13,500 square meters, while its area before this expansion was only 1600 square meters. The mosque was also attached to a library and a marketing area to serve visitors. partner
