Abu Al-Sa'ib Othman bin Maz'un Al-Jumahi

, who died in the month of Sha'ban in the year 3 AH, was one of the Badrian Companions, and one of the first to convert to Islam. He was distinguished by being the first immigrant to die in Medina, and the first to be buried in Baqi al-Gharqad.

Personal Biography:

Abu Al-Sa'ib Othman bin Maz'un bin Habib bin Wahb bin Hudhayfah bin Juma Al-Qurashi was one of the first to convert to Islam. He converted to Islam with thirteen others, including Ubaidah bin Al-Harith bin Al-Muttalib, Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, Abu Salama bin Abdul-Assad, and Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah. This important occasion occurred just before the Prophet Muhammad entered Dar Al-Arqam to present his call to Islam.

Othman bin Mazun, brother of Abdullah and Qudamah bin Mazun, was a relative of the two venerable companions Omar bin Al-Khattab and Hafsa bint Omar. His mother, Sakhila bint Al-Anbas bin Wahban bin Wahb bin Hudhayfah bin Juma, added to his distinguished lineage.

Othman participated in the two migrations to Abyssinia (Abyssinia) with his son Al-Sa'ib. When they heard of the conversion of Quraysh to Islam, they returned to Mecca. Othman turned to Al-Walid bin Al-Mughira, but he refused. After that, he migrated to Yathrib (later known as Medina) and formed a relationship with Abu al-Haytham ibn al-Tahan.

Othman bin Mazun actively participated in the Battle of Badr alongside the Prophet Muhammad. His devotion to worship was exceptional, by fasting during the day and praying at night. He abstained from worldly desires, isolated himself from women, and asked the Prophet for permission to practice asceticism. However, the Prophet advised against this, emphasizing his role as a role model for society.

Uthman ibn Mad'un, known for his strict avoidance of alcohol even in the pre-Islamic era, left a legacy of piety and devotion to his religion. His deep commitment to Islam and exemplary lifestyle made him a revered figure in Islamic history.

His departure:

Othman bin Mazun passed away peacefully in Medina in the month of Shaban in the year three AH. His death was a poignant moment as he became the first immigrant to die in the city. Moreover, he has the distinction of being the first person to be buried in the blessed land of Baqi Gharqad. His legacy lives on through his descendants - Abdul Rahman and Al-Saib - and their mother Khawla bint Hakim Al-Sulami.

Physical traits:

Othman bin Mazun was described as a man of firm resolve, and he had a thick beard, neither too short nor too long, which reflects the strength of his character.

very sad

Upon his death, the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, entered to bid him a final farewell. Then the Prophet said with a gentle kiss: “May God have mercy on you, O Uthman. No harm has befallen you, and no harm has touched you.”

Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, witnessed this touching scene, as she saw the Prophet kissing Othman bin Mazun even when he was dead, with tears streaming down his face. Othman’s wife, Umm Al-Alaa, also had a big dream in which she saw him with flowing eyes. When I shared that with the Prophet, he confirmed: “This is his reward.”

Othman’s legacy remained, and his wife expressed her grief poetically:

Oh, precious eye, you shed tears that you do not ask for.

Othman bin Mazun has a great loss.

He slept contented with the grace of his Creator.

Blessed is his rest, a holy grave.

The rest became his quiet abode,

Its soil is radiant after the experimental situation.

A sad heart that has not been broken yet

Even death when sorrows are complete.

And as he ascends, my grief approaches,

At every step, my soul was honoring her.”
