Zaid bin Al-Khattab bin Nufayl bin Abdul-Uzza Al-Adawi Al-Qurashi was the son of the master of Banu Adi Al-Khattab bin Nufayl, and Zaid’s mother was Asma bint Wahb bin Habib from Banu Asad bin Khuzaymah, and his paternal brother was Omar bin Al-Khattab, the second caliph of the Muslims.

His biography

Zaid was older than Omar. Zaid converted to Islam in the past before his brother Omar, and he was one of the first immigrants to Yathrib. The Prophet Muhammad made him a brother with Maan bin Adi, and he witnessed all the scenes with the Prophet Muhammad.

After the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Zaid participated in the wars of apostasy, and carried the Muslim banner in the Battle of Al-Yamamah, at the beginning of which the Muslims retreated in defeat, so Zaid began to say: “As for men, there are no men. He began to shout at the top of his voice: “O God, I apologize to you for the flight of my companions, and I disavow before you what Musaylimah and Muhakam al-Yamamah brought.” And he began marching with the banner, advancing with it until he was killed.

He was killed that day by Abu Maryam al-Hanafi, and it was said that Salamah bin Subaih al-Hanafi, and his death occurred in the battle of al-Yamamah in Rabi` al-Awwal. Year 12 AH. The people of Al-Yamamah built domes over the grave of Zaid bin Al-Khattab and other major companions who were killed in the battle, which they would visit and seek blessings from, until Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhab and his followers demolished those domes, and the one who demolished the dome of the tomb of Zaid bin Al-Khattab was Ibn Abdul-Wahhab himself.

As for the description of Zaid, he was dark-skinned and very tall. The son’s descendants, Abd al-Rahman, were followed by his mother Lubabah bint Abi Lubabah bin Abd al-Mundhir, and her mother’s names were Jamila bint Abi Amer bin Saifi. Zaid bin Al-Khattab has a narration of the Prophetic hadith on the authority of the Prophet Muhammad, for one hadith, which was narrated on his authority by his nephew Abdullah bin Omar and his son Abdul Rahman bin Zaid.

Omar had great love for his brother Zaid. It was narrated that Omar said to Zaid one day: “Put on my armor,” and Zaid said: “I want from martyrdom what you want,” so they both abandoned it. Omar was deeply saddened by him when he was killed, and said: “He preceded me to the Hasanis: he converted to Islam before me, and was martyred before me.” The sources also mention that Omar bin Al-Khattab said to his son Abdullah when he returned from the Battle of Al-Yamamah, “Didn’t you perish before Zaid? Zaid perished while you were alive.

” He said, “I was keen for that to happen, but I was late, so God honored him with martyrdom.” Other sources indicate his saying, “He did not come.” Because Zaid perished, did you not see your face before me?” Abdullah said, “He asked God for martyrdom and I was given it, and I struggled to be led to it, but I was not given it.” Omar used to say: “Sabbah never came unless I felt the scent of Zaid.” Omar met Abu Maryam al-Hanafi, the killer of Zaid, and Omar at that time was the Caliph. He said to him: “Did you kill Zaid bin al-Khattab?” Abu Maryam said: “May God honor him with my hand, and he did not disgrace me with his hand.

” So Omar asked him: “How many of you do you think Muslims killed that day?” He said: “One thousand four hundred, a little more.” Omar said: “Wretched are the dead!” Abu Maryam said: “Praise be to God who kept me alive until I returned to the religion that was approved for His Prophet, peace be upon him, and for the Muslims.” Omar was pleased with what he said.
