Durrat bint Abi Lahab

a female immigrant companion, is the cousin of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace.

Her life

She is Durrat bint Abi Lahab bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf bin Qusayy, and her mother is Umm Jamil bint Harb bin Umayyah bin Abd Shams. Her father, Abu Lahab, whose name is Abd al-Uzza, was one of the mainstays of infidelity in Mecca, and one of the people who most denied and harmed the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, and her mother, Umm Jamil, used to harm the Prophet Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, until Surat al-Masad was revealed about them. Her brothers and sisters are: Utba, Otaiba, Mutab, Khaleda, and Azzah, and they all converted to Islam, except for Utaiba, who was killed by Assad in Zarqa as an infidel.

Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned that Durrat was with al-Harith bin Nawfal bin al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and she bore him Utbah, a son, and Abu Muslim. Ibn Saad said: Al-Harith bin Amir bin Nawfal bin Abd Manaf bin Qusayy married her, and she bore him a son, Abu al-Hasan, and Muslim, then he was killed on the day of Badr. He was an infidel, so Dihya bin Khalifa bin Farwa Al-Kalbi succeeded her.

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani said: “She was with Al-Harith bin Nawfal bin Al-Harith bin Abdul Muttalib, and she bore him Uqba, Al-Walid and others. This is what Ibn Abdul-Barr said, and Ibn Saad said: Al-Harith bin Amer bin Nawfal bin Abd Manaf bin Qusayy married her, and she bore him Al-Walid and Abu Al-Hassan. He converted to Islam, then he was killed on the day of Badr as an infidel, and Dihya bin Khalifa Al-Kalbi succeeded her. Ibn Hajar also said: “Al-Baladhuri mentioned that Zaid bin Harithah married her, and perhaps that was before Al-Harith bin Nawfal married her. It was said: Dihya al-Kalbi married her.

Her conversion to Islam and people hurting her because of her father

Durrat converted to Islam and migrated to Medina, and Ibn Abi Asim, Al-Tabarani, and Ibn Mandah narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar, on the authority of Saeed Al-Maqbari, and Ibn Al-Munkadir, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, and on the authority of Ammar bin Yasser. They said: Durra bint Abi Lahab came to Medina as an immigrant, so she stayed at the house of Rafi’. Ibn Al-Mu'alla, and women from Banu Zurayk said to her: “You are the daughter of Abu Lahab, to whom God says: ‘May the hands of Abu Lahab rest’. What will your emigration be of no use to you?” So Durrat came to the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, and mentioned that to him. He said: “Sit down.” Then he led the people in the noon prayer, and sat on the pulpit for an hour, then said: “O people, what harm have I done to my family?” By God, my intercession will attain my kinship to the point that even rust, firewood, and flames will attain it on the Day of Resurrection.”

Ibn Mandah narrated, on the authority of Yazid bin Abd al-Malik al-Nawfali, on the authority of Sa`id al-Maqbari, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, that Subayah bint Abi Lahab came to the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, and said: “The people are shouting at me and saying: I am the daughter of the wood of the fire.” So he stood up. The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, was very angry, so he said: “What is the matter with people who harm me regarding my lineage and my relatives?” Indeed, whoever harms my lineage and relatives has harmed me, and whoever harms me has harmed God.” Abu Naim said: The truth is Durrah. Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani said: It is possible that she had two names, or one of them was a nickname, or the story had multiple narrations involving two women.

Al-Daraqutni narrated in the book “Al-Ikhwa”, Ibn Adiy in “Al-Kamil”, and Ibn Mandah, on the authority of Ali bin Abi Talib, on the authority of Durrat bint Abi Lahab, who said: The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, said: “A living person is not harmed by a dead person.” The husband of Durrat bint Abi Lahab narrated on the authority of Durrat bint Abi Lahab, who said: A man stood up to the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, while he was on the pulpit and said: O Messenger of God, which people are the best? He said: “The best of people are those who are most readable and pious of them, who enjoin them to do what is right and forbid them what is wrong, and who connect them to family ties.” It was said that Dorra died around the year 20 AH.
