 Farewell sermon

The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered this sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage on the Day of Arafah from the Mount of Mercy, where the revelation was revealed, announcing: "Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."

Praise be to God, we praise Him, seek His help, ask for His forgiveness, and repent to Him. We seek refuge in God from the evils of ourselves and from the evils of our deeds.

I advise you, servants of God, to fear God, obey Him, seek His forgiveness, and rectify your deeds. Now, O people, listen to me, for I do not know if I will meet you after this year in this position of mine.

O people, your lives and your honor are sacred until you meet your Lord, just as this day of yours, in this month of yours, and in this land of yours are sacred.

Usury of ignorance is abolished, but you shall have your capital. Wrong not, and you shall not be wronged. God has decreed that there shall be no usury, and the first usury I abolish is that of my uncle Al-Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib.

Blood feuds of ignorance are abolished, and the first blood feud I abolish is that of Amer bin Rabia bin Al-Harith bin Abdul Muttalib. The practices of ignorance are also abolished except for the sustenance, watering, and intentional harm. Whoever increases beyond this is from the people of ignorance.

Furthermore, O people, Satan has despaired of being worshiped in this land of yours. However, he is content to be obeyed in matters other than worship. Beware of him concerning your religion.

O people, women have rights over you, and you have rights over them. They should not enter anyone you dislike into your homes without your permission, nor should they commit indecency. If they do, God has permitted you to prevent them and leave them in separate beds. You may also lightly beat them, but if they obey you, then provide for them and clothe them appropriately. Be kind to women, as they are committed to you by God's trust and permission for marriage.

O people, believers are brothers, and no one should claim the wealth of his brother without his consent. Have I conveyed the message, O God, bear witness!

Do not turn back to disbelief, striking each other's necks. I have left among you something that, if you hold fast to it, will prevent you from going astray: the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet.

O people, your Lord is one, and your father is one. All of you belong to Adam, and Adam was created from dust. The most honorable of you in God's sight is the most pious. No Arab has superiority over a non-Arab except through piety.

They said, "Yes," and he said, "Let those who are absent inform those who are present."

O people, God has apportioned to each heir his share of the inheritance, and it is not permissible for an heir to make a bequest exceeding one-third. The child belongs to the marriage bed, and the adulterer shall be stoned.

May God's blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family and companions.
