Omair bin Saad bin Obaid Al Ansari

He was one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad. He pledged allegiance to the Prophet while he was still a young boy. His father, the venerable companion Saad, participated in the Battle of Badr alongside the Prophet Muhammad, witnessed the subsequent events, and was martyred in the Battle of Al-Qadisiyah.

Umair's love for the Prophet

One notable incident that demonstrated Umayr's love and commitment to Islam occurred when he informed the Prophet about his stepfather Gulas bin Suwayd. Jolas had doubted the Prophet’s sincerity, saying: “If Muhammad is truthful in what he claims, then we are the worst donkeys.” Umair immediately informed the Prophet of this statement. Then the Prophet summoned Golas, who swore to deny the accusation, and Umair stuck to his testimony.

Then the revelation came down to the Prophet with this verse: “They swear by God that they did not say, but they said the word of disbelief, and they disbelieved after their conversion to Islam and reconsidered what had happened.” They would not have attained it, nor would they be displeased, unless God and His Messenger enriched them of His bounty. If they repent, it is better for them, but if they turn away, God will punish them. “They will have a painful punishment in this world and the hereafter, and they will have on earth neither guardian nor helper” (Surat Al-Tawbah 74).

When Gulas faced the undeniable truth, he admitted his mistake and expressed his repentance. At this moment the Prophet turned to the young man Umair. Tears of joy streamed down Umair's bright face as the Prophet extended his gracious hand toward Umair's ear and said, "Open your ear, young man, and listen! Your Lord has spoken the truth to you."

His mandate is for Homs

When Omar ibn al-Khattab assumed the caliphate, he began selecting his governors and employees on the principles he outlined in his famous statement: “I want a man who is not among the people their prince,” but rather like one of them, and when he is their ruler he does not look different from them. I want a ruler who does not distinguish himself from the people in his dress. There is no food or accommodation. He prays among them. He does justice, rules justly, and does not close his door to their needs.”

Following these principles, Omar chose Umair to be governor of Homs. Omair tried to abdicate this responsibility, but Omair insisted on appointing him.

Umair understood the weight of leadership and defined the duties of a Muslim ruler when addressing the people of Homs. He stressed that Islam is a fortified wall with a fortified door, and the wall is justice, and the door is truth. If this wall collapses and the door becomes weak, Islam will be exposed to danger. He stressed that the strength of Islam is not in the power of rule, sword, or force, but in establishing justice and adhering to the truth.

  His death

In the last years of his life, Umair bin Saad continued to reside on the outskirts of Medina until his death in the Caliphate of Umar.
